Professional experience

John is a seasoned business development professional with experience working in several countries and a true passion for translating early-stage innovations into successful commercial products and services that will benefit the public and return value to the inventors and the institution. John possesses a deep understanding of what is needed to build partnerships between academia, industry and investors and to translate early-stage innovations into successful commercial ventures and licensing deals. He has successfully structured, negotiated and closed a significant number of complex and financially impacting license, business development and research funding deals with start-ups, large and small, as well as existing companies. He is regarded as an innovative and outside-the-box thinker who is always pushing the boundaries of his field, looking for new ways and new ideas to do business.

John has a diverse background spanning basic research, technology transfer and university spinoff companies. He is presently the Senior Associate Director, Head of the Licensing team in the Office for Technology Transfer & Industry Collaboration at Tufts University, Boston and the main contact projects and technologies for the Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine.

John’s projects include the following activities:

• evaluation of new inventions, marketing, negotiations and contracts
• IP strategy and patent management, alliance management
• lead technology development projects;
• catalyze the formation of start-up companies and secure early financing;
• form research collaborations between Tufts scientists and industry partners.

He holds a biology undergraduate degree from the University of Thessaloniki, M.Sc. degree in molecular biology from Carleton University (Ottawa, Canada), a MBA degree from Queen’s University in Canada, and the Certified Licensing Professional (CLP) designation. John is a frequent speaker at local technology transfer events and national conferences. He also volunteers with the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM), the Licensing Executive Society (USA-Canada), and has served as a mentor to many colleagues and trainees.
