Professional experience

Elias S. Manolakos is an Associate Professor at the University of Athens, Departement of Informatics and Telecommunications, where he directs the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program “Information Technologies in Medicine and Biology” and a Visiting Scholar at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering, Harvard University, Boston. Before returning to Greece he was a tenured faculty with the ECE Dept. of Northeastern University, Boston where he has directed the Communications and Digital Signal Processing Research Center, promoting academia-industry collaboration in the Boston area.

His research interests include signal/image/data analysis, machine learning, high performance and embedded computing, and their application to emerging interdisciplinary domains, such as computational & systems biology, environmental sustainability and cyber-physical systems. He has received (2013) the “Excellence” Award, a very competitive distinction a PI may win in Greece to perform research leading to the development of efficient computing systems for large scale biomolecular networks inference and stochastic simulation. His research has attracted substantial support from US, EU and GSRT funding agencies.

He holds a Ph.D. degree in Computer Engineering from University of Southern California, MSEE degree from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens.

He is an elected member of the International IEEE Technical Committee on Machine Learning for Signal Processing. He has authored, or co-authored with his students, more than 120 publications in refereed international Journals and Conference Proceedings. Prof. Manolakos is a Senior Member of the IEEE.
